Fred Wegman delivers focused training for FIA Clubs in Africa and East Asia

This year, DRSC has been partnering with the FIA and FIA Foundation to organise regional road safety courses for FIA Automobile Clubs in Africa and East Asia.

In February, Course Leader Fred Wegman visited Dar Es Salam, Tanzania to deliver a three-day training programme for members of the African Council of Touring and Automobile Clubs (ACTA).

Organised in partnership with the Automobile Association of Tanzania and the FIA Foundation, the training focused on deepening understanding of safe system principles, road safety concepts, and advocacy tailored to the region, and with a focus on safe school journeys.

The training brought in expertise from iRAP, Amend and the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety to offer demonstrations of putting theory into practice. iRAP shared successful road safety implementation examples in Botswana and Tanzania, with Amend sharing the methodology of their successful SARSAI project. Participants also learned how to use the Global Alliance of Road Safety NGOs Advocacy Toolkit, which is designed to help organisations build their case and approach policymakers to effect change.

With similar a training course also being delivered in East Asia, participating clubs are now encouraged to use learnings to implement projects in their own countries and strengthen their applications for support through the FIA Road Safety Grants Programme.
