Steffel establishes DataMobilize, a new youth-led digital platform for citizen road safety reporting
DRSC alumnus Steffel Feudjio (2024–25) is a Transport Specialist based in Cameroon. Since completing the DRSC course in 2025 he has supported administration, development partners, and research centres in applying road safety principles across transport projects, research, education, and community-led initiatives.
His biggest achievement however has been in developing two road safety initiatives: DataMobilize, a digital platform for citizen-based road crash and hazard reporting in Yaoundé, and RoadAware Cameroon, which promotes safer commercial driving through passenger engagement.
DataMobilize was built directly on DRSC learning to address a fundamental challenge in Cameroon: the lack of reliable road safety data on which to base decisions. Supported by an implementation grant from the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety, the youth-led initiative combines a mobile application, an interactive crash map, community reporting tools, and public education into a single platform. It is aimed at citizens and road users in Yaoundé, so far reaching more than 200 people, enabling them to report crashes and hazardous road conditions. With further communication and outreach, Steffel hopes to progressively engage users from other regions of the country.
He led the design and implementation of the platform end-to-end drawing directly from lessons on Module 6 of the DRSC Annual Course — Informing Policy Decisions — to design DataMobilize’s data collection framework, reporting tools, and interactive crash map. In its pilot phase, DataMobilize trained 20 youth advocates in road safety, policy engagement, and community advocacy and reached approximately 700 community members through awareness campaigns. As the platform develops, Steffel aims for greater institutional engagement with city councils, road authorities and the police, particularly in using citizen-generated data to support road safety decision-making.
Alongside DataMobilize, Steffel has supported the delivery of transport and road safety lectures at the National Advanced School of Public Works (ENSTP) of Yaoundé, integrating Safe System principles, and reaching more than 50 graduate students, many of whom are practising transport professionals and civil servants. He has also supervised four Masters’ theses in transport and road safety.
The success of DataMobilize has since inspired RoadAware Cameroon, a new initiative focused on improving commercial driver behaviour through passenger engagement.
Steffel’s DRSC experience has supported him in expanding both his technical expertise and professional responsibilities. He is now an active figure in the international transport and road safety community, recently joining the 2026-2028 Leadership Cohort of the International Road Federation (IRF) Young Professionals Programme and 5th cohort of the Young Leaders in Sustainable Transport Programme led by SLOCAT and Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF).
